What is starting up with your system?

***This is a step by step guide on clearing your startup group. Follow the steps below and your computer will most likely run alot faster and smoother. This tutorial is only for use with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP. For reference to the items in your startup group we recommend opening the Start Up Full List. This is a great reference to almost anything in your startup. Or you can also use Google to search.***

  1. Go to the start menu and click on the Run icon.


  2. Then delete any text that might allready be in the Open field. And type in the word MSCONFIG, as shown below. Then click the Ok button. This will open the System Configuration Utility.


  3. With the System Configuration Utility window open you will click on the startup tab. In this tab it shows most all programs and files that are starting up with your system this is also one of the main resons for system lockups and low system resources. In this list you might have some of them checked or all of them checked. You DON"T need any of the items in here to be checked for the system to startup properly but, there are some that you would want to keep checked for Windows preformance perposes. These items that you want to keep checked are...
    • Scanregistery or Scanreg
    • Taskmon or Taskmonitor
    • SysTray or Systemtray
    • PChealth
    • Load Power Profiles or Loadpowerprofiles
    • Anything that starts with the letters NAV (Norton Anti-Virus) or the letters MC (McAffee Anti-Virus)

    Pretty much everything else can be unchecked. Watch out for anything that is named strange like DW, PromolGate, P2P Networking, BullGuard. When in dout refer to the list on the link posted above.




  4. After you get everything uncheck that needs to be, click the Apply button and then the OK or Close button at the bottom of the Window. Then it will ask you if you want to restart the computer now. Click the YES button and the computer will shutdown and restart. It will probably startup alot faster the next time it starts up.


  5. If you get a alert box that says "You have used the system configuration utility for troubleshooting perposes...". Check the little check box that says don't show this again and then click the OK button.
***Your system should now be running alot faster. If it is still running slow our giving you Pop-up windows when you are connected to the Internet but, not viewing webpages then you may have Spyware on your system. For information about Spyware and how to remove it click HERE.***
